113. DVD Captain Corelli's Mandolin

------------------------------

Hi,Everyone this BBS has been quit and empty these days.

Last week I watched Captain Corelli's Mandolin on DVD
after I read this GR book.

This book is a fantastic love story during World War II.

Before I watched it I thought the story of GR book is more
simplified than that of DVD.
But Contryry to my expectation, regarding this book, GR is
not more simplified than that.

I don't know which GR book or movie is more simplified
in general.

Do anyone have idea about this?

Anyway. I felt happy because I understood story of
Captain Corelli's Mandolin rather than people who watched
it on movie.

Bye

Hi, Genkotsu-san!

〉I don't know which GR book or movie is more simplified
〉in general.

I am not quite sure about it either, but then I never
thought about the question, either. So, let me think...

I'd say it's about the same. Film versions and GR
versions both have limitations and they end up being
roughly the same in terms of their distances from the
original.

Come to think of it, film scenarios are
about 10,000 words long for a two-hour film, and its
GR versions are about the same length---12,000 words
for The Client (PGR4).

Films of course have visual information, so they should
have an advantage over GR's as far as the amount of
information is concerned. But the reader can use their
imagination, and that could make a great difference.

So, all in all, I'd say films and GR's are roughly
the same as adapted artworks.

I'd like to know what other people have to say
on this interesting question. Thank you, Genkotsu-san,
for bringing it up.

〉Anyway. I felt happy because I understood story of
〉Captain Corelli's Mandolin rather than people who watched

〉Bye

Wow, Sakai-sensei!

Thank you very much for concerning about this.
Originally the reason I wanted to read Captain Corelli's Mandolin
terribly is that I heard this book's reputation from Sakai-sensei.
After all I enjoyed this very much. I owed you a lot.

The number of words you show me is very interesting.
I am with you on this point.
Maybe I felt the ending of this movie is happier than that of GR.
So I thought scenario of movie is more simplified.

〉I'd like to know what other people have to say

I want to know much more about this either.
Let us know!!

Bye

Hi, Genkotsu-san! Kian is speaking.
I am sorry. I hadn't read this board for a loooooong time.

I've never read GR books of higher than level3.
So I think I can't say anything about it.

But I have read a PB, a GR(PGR2) and a translation and watched a movie of 'Of mice and men' by Steinbeck.
Can I tell about them?

First of all, I watched the movie and it moved me so much.
I was really keen to read the PB but I couldn't.
So I read the translation first.
Next, I read the PB.
I thought the movie had same mood as the PB.
But they were different in detail, of course.
For instance, in the movie, some character's episodes were missed and the final scenes were different.
But I liked both of them.

And after I started extensive reading, I read the GR.
It was soooooooo simplified.
(Because the GR was in level 2, of course I know.)
Before everything, the characters in the GR didn't use any slang at all.
And many episodes were missed.
There were many interesting original books even though the same title's GR books were boring, I thought as I read the GR.

Any way, I recommend the movie 'Of mice and men' and please read the oreginal book some day in the near future.

Happy reading!

Hi, Kian-san! Long time no see.

I am always looking forward to your post.

〉Can I tell about them?

Why not? go ahead!
I haven't read this book yet.
but I am very interested in this, so I will lend tomorrow
from Book-Club at Shinjuku. I hope it will be availabe.

〉First of all, I watched the movie and it moved me so much.

〉But I liked both of them.

In my case, to tell the truth if I watched the movies, I didn't read
the same title's books. Because I didn't want to try to take a secound
excitement from another media or original works.

But after my extensive reading, I want to know retold stories(GR)
as well as original stories and that of other media such as movies
and listening tapes.

Regarding Corelli I thought GR shows more painful love story
than that of movie.

I wonder I could read original works from the beginning!

〉Any way, I recommend the movie 'Of mice and men' and please read the oreginal book some day in the near future.

Thank you for your recommendation!
I will do.

This is Genkotsu.

I didn't find "Of mice and men" in Book Club.
But coincidentally I fond the same titled book
at book shop near my house and bought is soon.

On my way home I was happy.
But I read a couple of pages. I felt it diffucult to read.
The book is "PENGUIN MUSE COLLECTON
Gensho de tanoshimu Eibei bungaku series".

Finally I put this book to bed at bookshelf.
I would like to read this near future.

Bye.

I have the book by "Penguin books".
I am sure you can read the book after you watch the movie.
John Malkovich (Lennie) and Gary Sinise (George) will speak in your head!

Good night, Lennie and George!

By the way, I read "Great expectations" (MGR5) recently and it was so interesting!
And last fall, I watched the movie with Ethan Hawke as Pip (Finn) and Gwyneth Paltrow as Estella.
In the movie many episodes and human relations had been abbreviated.
I didn't think I had known about "Great expectations" by Charles Dickens at all even though I had watched the movie.
Any way, I recommend the book.
It was full of any kinds of human's emotions.

Happy reading!

I can't be calm until I read orijinal one or I watch movie.
Does Kian-san make sense?

By the way, I went and lent VIDEO "Great Expectations" and

Hi, everyone and Genkotsu-san! Kian is speaking.
And excuse me, but I am going to tell you the final scene of "Of mice and men", so if you don't want to know it, please don't read the following.

〉Finally I read "Of mice and men(GR)".
〉I expected the story is happy one, though.
〉It was very serious.

Oh, I am sorry, but I did not tell you that it was a very serious story.

〉I don't know what the author want us to know.
〉The more I think, the deeply it get mysteriou for me.
〉I can't be calm until I read orijinal one or I watch movie.
〉Does Kian-san make sense?

I am not sure what the author wanted us to know, but the love between Lennie and George moved me so much.
George killed Lennie because he loved Lennie, I think.
If he didn't kill Lennie, one of the other men would kill Lennie, and George was sure that.
If one of the other men killed Lennie, he trembled with fear and George couldn't stand that.
Lennie didn't notice at all that George was going to kill him.
That was all George could do, I think.

It was the age of the Great Depression, I think.
They worked very hard but they couldn't earn enough money.
Life was difficult for many people, Steinbeck wanted us to know that perhaps, I wonder.

Anyway I understand how you feel.
I remember the movie was too sad to think about "Of mice and men" soon after I watched it.
But after I calmed dowm I wanted to read the book.
So I think it moves us slowly, don't you think so?

〉By the way, I went and lent VIDEO "Great Expectations" and
〉"Oliver Twitst" but haven't still watch.
〉I am going to write the impression after waching.

Oh, I am very looking forward to hearing from you so much!

Hi, Kian-san

I am please to tell you that I understand the ending ot that story.
You made my day.

I am really for your idea.
You are a person of good insight.

Great Depression..
This reminds me of New Deal program,
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Hoover Dam.
