Yomiyasusa Level (YL), started by Akio Furukawa of SSS Group in 2003, is a newly established
way to measure the reading level of English books. SSS Group, in cooperation
with Japan Extensive Reading Association, whose chair is Professor Minami
Kanda at Heisei Kokusai University, develops YL to appeal to the learners
of English as a foreign language in 100 levels.
Factors like ilustrations, the backgrounds of the books, the size of fonts and different text styles will affect the reading level of the books. Website URL: http://www.seg.co.jp/sss/YL/index.html and the gA Perfect Book Guide For Extensive Readingh (gEigo
Tadoku Kanzen Book Guide (In Japanese)h written by Furukawa, Kanda and al.,
published from Cosmopier Publisher. in 2005) indicate the YL, which is renewed
every year after getting feedback from English teachers and learners.
More than 10,000 books including Graded Readers from
major publishers are evaluated in 100 levels from 0.0 to 9.9.
The followings are some examples of YL.
YL 0.0: Readable without the knowledge of English language.
YL 1.0: Readable to learners of English with more than 80 hours of
studying.
YL 3.0: Childrenfs books of about 10,000 words length.
YL 7.0: Paperbacks (Stories) for adults.
YL 8.0: More difficult paperbacks
In the SSS Extensive
Reading Method, which Start with Simple Stories promote, we suggest that
you start reading from the easiest picture books and gradually move to higher
levels. Often in classes, there are many more skills you teach beside extensive
reading. For example, grammar, intensive reading, conversation, writing, and TOEIC. Whereas the Extensive Reading will not
be affected by the levels of other skills as above, it needs its own levels
to progress. Often at Japanese schools, intensive reading classes give
students English knowledge but it does not mean that the students acquire
the language at that level. Being exposed to a large amount of reading
time, students will be able to acquire the language.

This table is
not absolute for all students. But in our experience, if students increase
their reading level more quickly than the table recommends, most of them stop
reading because they become stressed from reading.. We strongly suggest that
students gradually raise the level of the books so that they will not become
stressed from reading.
