英語でエッセイを書く

「英語でエッセイを書く」などというとえらく難しいことをするように
聞こえるかもしれませんが、思ったことを自分が知っている英語で書けば
よいのです。長いものである必要はありません。ただし、日本語で文を
考えてからそれを英訳しようなどとしてはいけません。最初から英語で
書かないとだめです。また、書けないことを無理に書こうとするのも
いけません。気軽に、今の自分の英語のストックを利用して書けることを
書けばよいのです。日記を付けるというのはどなたにもお勧めの勉強法です。
毎日英語を書いていれば、必ず上達します。

先週、私が教えている中学３年生の定期考査に次の問題を出しました。
「イギリスでホームステイ中にホストファミリーから"Tell us all about
your school. What is it like? What are your teachers like?"と
言われました。さて何と答えますか。英語でできるだけたくさん書きなさい」

私の生徒たちは１年近く英語で日記を書くという練習をさせられてきて
いますので、中にはかなり書けるようになった生徒もいるのですが、
テスト中の限られた時間であわてて書くのはやはり大変です。しかし、
なかなか上手に書いている人もいましたよ。彼らは多読指導は受けて
いませんが、発音訓練・大量の音読・パッセージの暗唱と暗写の練習は
相当やってきましたので、頭の中の英語のストックは普通の中学３年生より
多いと思います。

生徒の答案の中から比較的上手に書けているものを三つ紹介します。
十分に推敲する時間を与えられずに書いたものですから、不注意な間違いが
多く見られますが、言いたいことは十分に伝わってくると思います。

My school is far away from the center of the city. Behind it, there
are beautiful mountains. We must study very hard there day after
day, but I am enjoying my school life. And there are a lot of great
teachers at my school. Some of them are amusing, others are always
caring about us. My school is very far away from my home, but I'm
not missing my family. Now they aren't, too. My heart has been
stronger since I came there. So I like there very much.

I'm in the third year at **** Junior High School. Our school is
connected with **** High. So most of us are studying for going to
university, not for going to high school. Of course, entering
university is not all our purposes. The teachers are really really
nice. They really care about us. Since we live in a dormitory, we
can't watch TV a lot. I think it may be good for us, but I'm a
little unhappy about it. The friendship among us is really strong.
We sometimes have fight, but that's because we are best friends.
I'm sure that there's not better school than our school.

My school is a male school. And we live in dormitory. Teachers
in this dormitory are very strict. But we enjoy the life in the
dormitory. Our school is in a lot of trees. So we can breathe
fresh air. The food of the dormitory is not very good, but we can
eat it with pleasant feeling, because of talking with a lot of
friends. Our teachers are very smart. My English teacher is very
good at English and tells us how to pronouce. Our math teacher
gives us a lot of home work , but he is good at teaching. So we
can enjoy school life.

彼らがもっと英語をたくさん読めば、もっと自然な表現が身に付くだろうと
思います。これからどのように学校という場で多読指導をさせようかと今
計画を練っているところです。
