The John Milne Innovation Award in Language Learner Literature

**Deadline for 2005 Award nominations: August 31, 2005**

The Extensive Reading Foundation is pleased to announce The John Milne Innovation Award in Language Learner Literature. This annual award has been established to recognise significant innovation in such categories as, but not limited to:

* a new product (e.g., a new concept series of readers);
* a new publishing concept (e.g., e-books);
* a piece of ground-breaking research into language learner literature;
* a new book or other publication promoting language learner literature in a novel way. (e.g., a teachers' resource book);
* a scheme for promoting language learner literature and making it more widely available to teachers and learners;
* an individual or organisation that has provided vision and initiative in language learner literature.

Normally the award is not made to a single language learner literature title, as there is already the Language Learner Literature Award for individual books.

The Award is named in honour of John Milne. As creator of the Heinemann Guided Readers series in the 1970s, Milne believed that the traditional grading of vocabulary and structure was not enough to make a book suitable for language learners. He therefore took a different approach, basing his series on good, clear writing, relevant content, careful control of information, flexible structure control, and intuitive vocabulary control. These innovations were crucial in the development of language learner literature.

Nominations are sought from any representative of a publisher or other institution (e.g., a university) with a professional interest in language learner literature, and any individual with such professional interest (e.g., an author; a teacher). Each nomination must be accompanied by a brief rationale explaining why it is a significant innovation in the field of language learner literature. Send nominations to Richard Day (Chair, ERF) at <rday@hawaii.edu>.

Nominations for the 2005 Award must be received by August 31, 2005. The winner will be announced at the Japan Association for Language Teaching Conference (October 7-10, 2005). For more information, visit <www.erfoundation.org>.
