★Chiyo <1929, age 9> (change her name to “Sayuri” after becoming a geisha.)
Chiyo was a fisherman’s daughter from a little town called Yoroido on the Sea of Japan.
She was clever, pretty girl. She had peculiar eyes, her eyes were a translucent blue-gray.
And she had so much water in her personality. She was very much like her mother.

★Satsu <age 15> (Chiyo’s sister)
Satsu did everything slowly. She wasn’t a pretty girl. And she had too much wood in her personality.
She was very much like her father.

★Parents
Father was a fisherman. His face was very heavily creased.
Mother grew terribly ill since Chiyo was seven. A doctor said “She’s going to die soon.”

★Mr. Tanaka
One day Chiyo got hurt and Mr. Tanaka, whose family owned the Japan Coastal Seafood Company
and he was a rich man, cared for Chiyo.
Next day, when Chiyo and Mr. Tanaka met again, he told her about his childhood.
"I was an orphan child. One day I was taken in by the Tanaka family.
So things turned out all right for me in the end.
Perhaps something like that might happen to you too.”
From that moment on, Chiyo began to has fantasies that Mr, Tanaka would adopt her.

■Sold into an Okiya <1929, age 9>
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Chiyo and Satsu were called Mr. Tanaka. Chiyo thought that he would tell them about their adoption.
But they were brought to a station. There was a peculiarly narrow man.
He wedged himself between Chiyo and Satsu.
He led them by their elbows into a train car.
The train arrived at Kyoto. Chiyo was taken to an okiya (it’s where geisha live) in Gion.
But the narrow man said to Satsu “You’re going elsewhere.”
The okiya’s mother said to Chiyo that “You must work very hard, and never leave the okiya without permission.
Do as you’re told, and you might begin learning the arts of a geisha two or three months from now.”
