Invitation to Japanese Kimono Fashion Show
A contemporary spin on the traditional Kimono

Innovative designer Toshiko Furukawa is holding a Japanese Kimono Fashion Show. Her first fashion show was back in 2003, and this is the 5th collection of her designs. This show expresses the female beauty in the form of fine art and it is not commercially based. Toshiko Furukawa makes western dresses by transforming Japanese traditional kimono and obi without cutting the fabric.
The cat walk show is directed by Naomichi Mutoh, who is famous for producing Alain Delon’s fashion shows.

Biography

Toshiko Furukawa was born in 1929 in Kyoto. She became a high school home economics teacher after graduating from Nara university. She has also written some books on handicraft and remaking dresses. She started collecting Japanese traditional kimono, hanten and obi in her fifties, and started her career in fashion design in her seventies. She has held her contemporary kimono fashion show every year since 2003. She makes western style dresses from Japanese kimonos without any cutting so that every dress can be transformed back to the original traditional style.
