Osaka University research scientists are again sponsoring a series of English-language

The sole pre-requisite is a keen interest in current (often controversial) "hot fields"
such as reproduction and gene manipulation. The seminars will be held every first Saturday
at the Genome Information Research Center (Iden Joho Jikken Center), located just inside
the gate of Osaka University nearest Kita Senri station on the Hankyu line.

■京都国際文化協会のセミナー KICA Seminar
3月11日(火)14時〜16時 参加費500円
テーマ "Life and Works of Alexander Pushkin"
Koto International Cultural Association has invited foreign researchers staying in Kyoto
to talk about their specialized fields and their interests in Japan as well.
Our guest this time will be Dr.Delya Gordon, a Russian chemist who confesses that her real
interest lies in the arts. She will talk about the life and works of Alexander Pushikin whom
she admires as "Russian Dante".
Alexander Pushkin(1799-1837) is a genius in Russian poetry. Many of his works have been
composed into opera; "Evgeny Onegin" and "Pique Dame" by Tchaikovsky, "Ruslan
and Ludmila" by Glinka, "Bolis Godunov" By Musorgsky, "Gold Cock" by Rimsky-Korsakov and so on.
Around the world, people admire Tolstoi, Dostoevski, and Chekhov but do not pay proper attention
to Pushikin's poetry, novels and dramas. There may be reasons for this. First it is very hard to
translate poetry, especially, Pushikin's poetry. It seems very simple at first glance, but there
is unbelievable charm in this simplicity, and you hear Mozart's music in every stanza of his poetry.
I hope you will read Nabokov's English translation of "Evgeny Onegin" although to read
the original is the best. Delya Gordon
Date: 14:00-16:00, Tuesday, March 11
Place: Room 105, Kyodai Kaikan, Sakyo, Kyoto
Lecturer: Dr.Delya Gordon
Fees: \500(refreshments served)
